Non-Surgical Back Pain Relief in Los Angeles: Is Pain-Free Realistic?
Non-surgical back pain relief in Los Angeles is a realistic goal for many people with disc-related pain, but “pain-free” is not a promise anyone can make. At Los Angeles Spinal Decompression®, Dr. Karr reviews your MRI or X-rays first, then decides whether non-surgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 fits your case.

Non-Surgical Back Pain Relief: How the Options Compare
Back pain has many possible treatments, and the evidence behind them varies. For example, the table below sets the 2017 American College of Physicians guideline next to what the decompression research has found so far.
| Option | Type | What the research shows |
|---|---|---|
| Heat, massage, acupuncture, spinal manipulation | Non-drug | The 2017 ACP guideline suggests these first for acute and subacute low back pain, with low- to moderate-quality evidence. |
| NSAIDs or muscle relaxants | Drug | The same guideline cites moderate-quality evidence and suggests them if drug treatment is desired. |
| Non-surgical spinal decompression plus physical therapy | Non-drug | One randomized trial of 60 patients with lumbar radiculopathy found decompression plus physical therapy beat physical therapy alone on pain and disability after 4 weeks. Follow-up was short, and the study used a different device than the DRX9000. |
| DRX9000 spinal decompression | Non-drug | A 13-patient case series (Connolly et al., Journal of Contemporary Chiropractic, 2025) reported improved pain and disability scores and increased disc height on MRI. It had no control group. |
| Spinal surgery | Surgical | Considered when conservative care fails or nerve involvement is serious. You decide this with a spine surgeon. |
Sources: Qaseem et al., Annals of Internal Medicine, 2017 and Amjad et al., BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 2022. Because each study has limits, treat this as a list of questions worth asking, not proof of any result. In addition, some insurers classify spinal decompression as investigational, and Medicare does not cover it.
What “Pain-Free” Really Means
Most people who ask about pain-free care want the same thing: to sit, sleep, work, and move without thinking about their back. That is a reasonable goal. However, no clinic can guarantee it. Dr. Karr sets goals with you after he reviews your imaging, then tracks how you respond.
What Happens at Your First Visit
- Bring your MRI or X-rays if you have them.
- We review your health history and where, when, and how the pain started.
- Dr. Karr reviews your imaging himself.
- He explains whether you are a candidate for non-surgical spinal decompression.
- If you are, we build a plan together.
Spinal decompression candidacy is determined by clinical evaluation. It is not right for everyone.

Back Pain Relief FAQ
Is pain-free realistic with spinal decompression?
For some people, spinal decompression is part of a plan to reduce disc-related pain and improve movement. However, the research is limited, and results vary from person to person. No one can guarantee you will be pain-free.
Can spinal decompression replace surgery?
Not in every case. Non-surgical spinal decompression is a conservative option some people try before considering surgery. If your symptoms get worse or you develop serious nerve symptoms, you may need a surgical opinion.
What is the DRX9000?
The DRX9000 is an FDA-cleared non-surgical spinal decompression system used for disc-related back pain and sciatica. Dr. Karr reviews your MRI or X-rays and history first, then decides whether you are a candidate.
How much does it cost, and is it covered by insurance?
Your first treatment is $149 with an approved MRI. We accept most PPO plans, but Medicare does not cover spinal decompression. For a full breakdown, read our spinal decompression cost guide.
When is back pain an emergency?
Go to the emergency room or call 911 if back pain comes with loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, new leg weakness, or fever, or if it follows major trauma. Do not wait for an appointment.
